What is DoD Directive 8570.1?
The US Department of Defense depends on its Information Assurance (IA) Workforce to protect vital information systems and information infrastructures. To ensure the IA workforce has the necessary skills and knowledge to accomplish this task, the DoD developed the 8570.1 directive.
The directive states that all DoD employees with privileged access to a DoD system, including military service personnel, defense contractors, civilian and foreign employees, must be certified on the concepts, principles and applications that will enhance the protection of the Department’s data, information systems and networks.
The directive has an aggressive timetable to have 100% of the workforce fully certified by 2010.
